Jewelweed (aka 'Spotted Touch-Me-Not' & 'Lady's Earrings')

  • If you touch the seed pod when it is ripe,  the pod "explodes" and the seeds are shot outwards, hence the name Touch-Me-Not.
  • The name Jewelweed is presumably from people that think the blossom looks like jewelled earrings.
  • The stem juices are said to offer relief from itching caused by Poison Ivy and insect bites.
  • The mashed leaves were used in early times to soothe rashes.
